Eileen J. Olivares

UCLA Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry

Biochemistry, Molecular, and Structural Biology

Eileen received her B.S. in Biochemistry and M.S. in Healthcare Systems Engineering from Loyola Marymount University (Los Angeles, CA). During the first part of her undergraduate career, she worked in Dr. Martina Ramirez’s lab, where she investigated the genetic diversity of the silver garden spider (Argiope argentata). Eileen spent the rest of her undergraduate career working in Dr. David Moffet’s lab. There she studied the aggregation of the islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) in several animals known to develop (or not develop) diabetes. In the Loo lab, Eileen studies a wide range of amyloidogenic proteins (e.g., ⍺-synuclein, amyloid beta, tau, etc.). She uses top-down mass spectrometry approaches to characterize the oligomeric species known to be the toxic forms of said proteins. When not reading academic journal articles, you will find Eileen gardening, running, watching movies, or planning the next family event.
